I’m sharing 10 Habits of Successful Bloggers that you and other aspiring bloggers can implement immediately to help you create the best blog possible. Firstly, some cautionary wisdom is needed before diving in. Here’s the truth… Successful blogs just don’t happen overnight. It takes a significant amount of time, effort, dedication (and a little luck) to find success as a blogger – a lot more than most realise. BUT, if you’re looking to create an amazing, thriving blog, it’s totally possible. There are a few habits you should think about adopting if you are serious about your blog:

1. They treat their blog like a business.

If you start a blog with the hopes of one day turning it into a business, you should treat it like a business from day one. This is one of the most important habits of successful bloggers. They know what they want out of their blogs, and work hard to achieve those goals. Treating one’s blog like a business results in the blogger committing time to growing it, to constantly improve it – one isn’t afraid to invest money in it to improve it, and you take it seriously. These days, it can be pretty tempting to fall into the trap of working all the time. We’re all about the hustle! But a great blogger knows that you need to have balance. They set office hours and shut down at the end of the day to take for themselves, and to be with friends and family. Relaxing and clearing your mind is so important.

2. They listen to their audience.

In order to create a thriving business, one has to know who their demographic audience is. Clearly identifying the audience one is trying to reach, will enable them to customise content, products, and services specifically tailored to their interests. A great blogger knows her audience, listens to what they want, and then delivers it! Nourishing relationships with their target audience is essential. Make time to engage with your audience. Successful bloggers encourage them to leave comments on your site by asking questions at the end of your blog posts. Then, they show their audience they’re also listening by leaving a response. They also start conversations on social media. Developing those relationships are so important.

3. Consistency.

Successful bloggers post regularly. One doesn’t have to post five days a week in order to be successful, but you the aspiring blogger should a schedule that works for them and stick to it. Creating a schedule not only gives you a routine for writing future blog posts, but also lets one’s audience know when to expect new posts. Savvy bloggers know the importance of delivering great content to their audience on a regular basis.

4. They take their time.

Quality content is Key! Successful bloggers take their time when writing posts and creating products instead of rushing. While it may take longer, it’s much better to spend extra time perfecting one’s work than it is to rush and put out something mediocre. Your audience deserves only the best! They’re also sure to include eye-catching, quality photographs to compliment their articles as well.

5. They set goals.

Goal-setting is essential for virtually every area of life, and this includes being a successful blogger! When we set goals, we set our sights high; in the process creating a plan of attack to achieve them. The best bloggers set goals for themselves in terms of growth (increased page views, subscribers, increased interaction with readers), and future projects, such as the goal to publish new e-books during the year. Whatever the goal is, successful bloggers Dream Big and Work Hard to make those goals a Reality.

6. They plan ahead.

Planning ahead makes blogging so much easier. For example, one can create an editorial calendar to plan future blog posts in advance. Reducing the time spent wondering about what to post, makes blogging less stressful. Successful bloggers make sure to organize their calendars at the beginning of the month and are prepared to research and write plenty of amazing content. Trust me, I’ learning this the hard way as I’m currently on a month-long January challenge to write a blog post everyday, and I tell you it is getting harder to come up with content. (Here is a link to the 12month planning sheet!)

7. They are covered on several social media platforms.

To gain an online presence and drive traffic to your blog, it is crucial to have a Facebook page, an Instagram account, a Twitter Account, a YouTube channel, a Pinterest etc., … One needs to be well branded, and be consistent with your brand and message so that you can build an audience connection. You can play around with other social media networks later on as you become more comfortable. Each one can attract a different audience and there are ways of leveraging each platform to grow your audience, which I will explain in future posts.

8. They affiliate and collaborate.

Successful bloggers collaborate with others, whether it’s another blogger or a brand. Collaborations are a great way to grow your audience, but can also help you build relationships with other people. They write guest posts, team up for webinars, interview each other, and even create products together. Affiliation is partnering with a company or brand and getting paid to have their advertisements on your blog or paid when someone purchases from them using a link you have directed them to.

9. They don’t compare themselves to others.

It’s easy to look around the web and see someone who is “doing better” than you are, but you can’t let that get you down. No matter what, there will always be someone who has more page views than you, more followers than you, and makes more money than you. Sorry to say it, but it’s the truth. However, successful bloggers don’t let that stop them. They continue to work on their own websites and achieve their own versions of success. And instead of being envious of someone else’s success, they support them!

Unfortunately, success in the blog world can be slow. It doesn’t happen overnight! Most Successful bloggers will tell you that you have to be patient and persist when you are trying to make a name for yourself online. Don’t get discouraged if your blog isn’t growing as fast as you’d like. It takes time and dedication to make amazing things happen.

I believe that to really gain momentum you need to have a presence on multiple platforms, Instagram, Twitter, Facebook, SnapChat etc I can’t stress this enough! You never know where you’ll get your first “big break,” and all it takes is one post going viral to gain momentum, new social media followers, and new readers. Bloggers will tell you that some of their best traffic days have come from shares in unexpected places. All it takes is the right person stumbling across one of your posts that really “speaks to them,” and sharing it with their audience.
